Fighting Disease
When you are struggling to be well or in some cases to survive, there’s a tendency to fight. Are you keeping up the fight? Being a strong warrior so your disease doesn’t get the better of you?

In some ways, we need to cultivate strength to weather pain and illness in our body; however, the attitude of fighting can create contraction, which inhibits healing. Fighting against your disease supports the belief that there’s something evil inside you that needs to be beaten.

Could you think of it more like a part of you that’s gone off track? Perhaps your disease is a rogue part that needs taming, soothing and loving so it won’t be destructive.

If you’re in eminent danger, your doctors will recommend an aggressive form of treatment to counter the destructive power of the disease. Even if you need this type of medical treatment, you can simultaneously work at healing in a softer way. The two paths are not mutually exclusive. People think they have to keep fighting or the disease will ‘get them’. That’s not necessarily so.

The softer way requires less force and more surrender. It invites you to listen inside in ways you aren’t likely doing. You may have no idea how. That’s okay, you can learn. I’m happy to teach you.

Listening in this meditative way ask us to let go of our plan, our knowing and our control. It asks us to come into relationship with our body and our disease in a way that we can begin to sense what is needed next in our healing. You may not know more than one step at a time. That’s okay.

What you need much more than an action plan is faith in you in your wholeness, in spite of all the information to the contrary. When your healing effort goes into surrender, acceptance, hope and visualization, you’ll find yourself in a different realm of possibilities.
