Why Is being present so hard?

Why is presence so hard to achieve? Why can't we still our minds and rest into the peace that we know, in theory, is possible if we could only be present? Being present sounds simple. You're just sitting and being and allowing and being still, but in fact it goes against our conditioning.

From a young age, most of us have been conditioned out of presence into the rules of society that disconnect us from our fundamental nature. Some of that training is necessary for our safety and for the smooth functioning of our families, our schools and our countries. But it also limits us, inhibits us, and prevents us from feeling safe, worthy, and able to just relax and trust that in any given moment we are okay. So, when you set out on the journey of retraining yourself, you're going to bump up against all of this conditioning, which is so vast that it can take quite a while to be able to relax, trust and find real ease.

Most people give up on presence because the job feels too hard. But really, what's the alternative? Can you accept never be able to be present? Without presence, you're missing so much of the beauty and the richness of life.

For me, the effort of meditation has been well worth committing to. It’s been a long process that I’ve been working at it for almost 25 years, and it keeps growing richer. All the time I have put into meditation, much of which was a big struggle at the beginning, has enriched my life. I would encourage any of you who have the inclination, to commit to a daily practice, it will change your life.
