In the throws of intense emotional pain

Do you know that the natural course of intense emotions is to rise up like waves, peak and then subside? The challenge people face is coping with the peak. At their highest peak, intense emotions can feel so intolerable that people jump off the wave. In the immediate, jumping off the wave feels relieving but it is a suppressive relief, not a natural resolution.

People jump off the wave by distracting themselves or numbing the pain in any number of ways. Ironically, since I’m writing for the online channel, social media is frequently used distraction. The challenge with jumping off the wave of our emotions is that the energy that was trying to move through us becomes stuck. If we habitually inhibit the natural course of our emotions, we will be prone to body ailments. That energy has to go somewhere and it gets repressed into some part of our body, depending on where our natural weakness lies.

So what’s the alternative? How do we ride those peaks and allow our emotional energy to discharge naturally? The first way is by breathing. Stay focused on your breath while you have the anger or sadness or whatever is overwhelming you. If the emotion still feels too intense, scan your body for one part of you that feels relaxed. While the inner storm rages, it’s common that at least one part will be unaffected. More you awareness and your breath to the part that feels relaxed and then, once rooted there, go back to the emotion and see if you can tolerate it better.

Making time to do a regular mindfulness practice will prepare you to hold space for yourself.
