Move beyond talk-based therapy for more immediate changes in your life.
Do you talk for 50 minutes, gain a few insights and then leave wondering if your psychotherapy is really helping you?
Have you unpacked your entire childhood three times over?
I get it.
You understand all your issues. You know what went wrong and why you do the things you wish you didn’t but you’re still doing them.
You’re still putting other people’s needs ahead of your own. People pleasing is hard to release.
You’re still silently irritated and hurt and you’re not sure you can ever forgive and truly be at ease.
You know the symptoms in your body are in part stress-related but despite adding in some yoga you still have that anxiety in the pit of your stomach when you're anxious that upsets your digestion.
You’re still going to the chiropractor to release the same aches and pains week after week but that’s normal, right?
You’re not connecting with yourself the way you hoped you would be by now and you’re not sure what you are really meant to be doing.
Thankfully, there’s another way.
Before I tell you about it, let me preface it by saying that I did years of talk-based therapy and it helped me a lot! There’s a time and a place for every therapy.
The challenge is that most talk-based therapy stays in the conscious mind and the pain and trauma that’s creating the unwanted behaviours and symptoms in your life is stored in the unconscious mind and in your body.
Somatic therapy explores the unconscious mind through the body. Using guided meditation, clients enter a deep state of presence where they learn to ‘hold space’ for the parts of the body that feel tight or closed.
Memories emerge through this body-based presence which guides people to meet themselves with the care and loving presence that was lacking earlier in life.
As this inner meeting occurs, the unmet needs that are stored as suppressed emotions begin to release, opening the door to profound change and growth.
What I love most about somatic therapy, is that you can learn how to access this process for yourself.
The meditations I teach in Meditation as Medicine are designed to bring you into this somatic therapy work. For most people, it takes about four to six weeks of dedicated practice to begin uncovering the material that has the most potential to change their health and their lives.
